A new electric fire can change the feel of a living room in an afternoon, but learning how to install an electric fireplace properly is about more than fixing a unit to the wall and switching it on. The position, wall construction, power supply and clearances all affect how safe, convincing and long-lasting the finished result will be.

Electric fireplaces are often simpler to fit than gas fires or wood burners because they do not need a chimney or flue. That does not mean every installation is a straightforward DIY job, particularly where a feature wall, inset fire or new electrical supply is involved. Taking the time to plan it well will give you a tidy focal point rather than a fire that looks added as an afterthought.

Choose the right type before you start

The installation method depends on the electric fireplace you have chosen. A wall-mounted fire sits on the face of a suitable wall, much like a television. It is usually the quickest option and works well where you want a modern focal point without major building work.

Inset electric fires are designed to sit within a fireplace opening, surround or recess. Some replace an existing electric fire, while others are fitted into a purpose-built media wall. These can create a more built-in appearance, but the opening must be the correct size and there must be enough room around the appliance for ventilation and access.

Freestanding electric stoves and fireplace suites are often the least disruptive choice. The fire may simply slot into a surround or stand against a wall, provided it is placed on a stable, level surface. They are particularly useful when you want the look of a traditional fireplace but do not want to alter the room permanently.

Before buying, check the manufacturer’s fitting instructions rather than relying on the visible dimensions alone. The fire’s overall width may be one measurement, but its recess, ventilation gaps and cable route can require considerably more space.

Plan where the electric fireplace will go

Start by looking at the room as a whole. An electric fireplace should feel balanced within the wall and work with the furniture layout, television position and existing focal points. If you are installing a fire below a television, do not assume any height will do. Heat rising from the appliance can affect the area above it, while a television fitted too high can be uncomfortable to watch. The correct separation varies by model, so follow both the fire manufacturer’s guidance and the television manufacturer’s recommendations. In some rooms, a mantel, shelf or purpose-built heat deflector may be appropriate, but only if it is compatible with the appliance instructions.

A sound wall is equally important. Solid brick and block walls generally provide a secure fixing point. Stud partitions can also support a wall-mounted electric fire, but fixings may need to go into timber studs or suitable noggins rather than plasterboard alone. Never guess what is behind a wall before drilling. Check carefully for pipes, cables and structural elements.

Check the power supply first

Most electric fireplaces are supplied with a standard three-pin plug and are intended to plug directly into a suitable wall socket. The socket should be readily accessible once the fire is installed, unless the manufacturer specifically permits another arrangement. This matters if the appliance needs to be isolated, serviced or reset.

Do not run the lead under carpets, behind tightly sealed panels or through areas where it could be crushed, overheated or damaged. Extension leads and multi-way adaptors are not a sensible permanent solution for an electric fire, especially one with a heater function. A dedicated nearby socket is usually the neatest and safest option.

Where a new socket, concealed wiring or alteration to a circuit is needed, use a qualified electrician. Electrical work in a home must be carried out safely and, depending on the work and property, may be subject to Building Regulations requirements. How to install an electric fireplace on the wall

For a wall-mounted model, begin by holding the supplied bracket in the proposed position and checking it is level. Measure from the floor, not from skirting boards or furniture, as floors and trims are not always perfectly even. Mark the fixing points clearly.

Use the correct drill bit, plugs and screws for the wall type. The supplied fixings may be suitable for masonry but not for a hollow stud wall, so do not use them automatically. The bracket must carry the full weight of the appliance securely, without movement.

Once the bracket is fixed, connect the fire as instructed and carefully lift it into place. Some models hook over a rail and lock with lower screws; others have a different fixing arrangement. Do not force the unit or trap the cable behind it. Fit any fascia, pebbles, logs or decorative fuel bed only after the main unit is secure.

Then test the flame effect and heater settings. Listen for unusual vibration, check that warm air can leave the outlet freely and make sure the fire remains stable when operated. If the appliance has a remote control, fit fresh batteries and keep the manual somewhere accessible.

Installing an inset fire or media-wall fire

Inset installations need more preparation because the fire must sit within an accurately formed opening. Measure the manufacturer’s required cut-out dimensions several times before building or altering a recess. Allow for the body of the fire, ventilation spaces, cable access and any service area needed to remove the appliance later.

For a media wall, use non-combustible or suitably rated materials wherever the appliance instructions require them. The fact that an electric fire has no real flame does not remove the need to manage heat from its outlet. Plasterboard, timber framing, insulation, paint finishes and shelves must all be selected and positioned with the product guidance in mind.

It is tempting to make the opening tight for a sleek appearance, but a fire should not be wedged into place. Restricted ventilation can cause overheating, noise or premature shutdown. Leave the specified gaps and provide a sensible route to the plug or electrical connection.

A recess also needs to be square and level. Even a small error can leave visible gaps around a frameless fire, particularly on wide panoramic models. If you are having a plastered feature wall built, it is often worth having the fire dimensions checked before the final finish is applied.

Finish the installation neatly and safely

Once the fire is fitted, step back and inspect the details. Check that the appliance is level, the trim sits flush and no cables are visible or under strain. Clean away drilling dust before switching it on, as dust can be drawn into a fan heater during the first use.

Read the operating instructions before relying on the heater. Many electric fires offer independent flame and heat controls, adjustable brightness, timers and thermostatic settings. Using these features properly can make the fire more economical and more enjoyable, particularly when you only want the visual effect in warmer months.

Keep the air inlet and outlet clear, and avoid drying clothes directly in front of the heater. If the fire trips the electrics, smells strongly after its initial run-in period, makes persistent unusual noises or displays an error code, switch it off and seek advice rather than continuing to use it.

A simple wall-mounted appliance on a solid wall can be suitable for a capable homeowner who follows the instructions closely. It also helps when you are choosing between styles. The most attractive fire in a showroom may not be the most practical model for your chimney breast, socket location or room proportions.
